EMDR

EMDR is a powerful tool, used only by specially trained licensed counselors, to address trauma. The protocol of EMDR activates the mental, emotional, physical aspects of the trauma or anxiety, which allows the brain to process the previously unprocessed event that has become ‘frozen’ in the person. It releases the person from the power of the symptoms remaining from whatever caused the ‘freezing’ in the first place.

EMDR is used with children, adolescents, and adults to address many types of trauma including, but not limited to:

  • Adoption
  • Abuse
  • Anxiety
  • Disturbing memories
  • Grief and loss
  • Divorce
  • Panic attacks
  • Medical/hospital procedures and experiences
  • Natural disasters
  • Family contact
  • Nightmares and other sleep disorders
  • Bullying/victimization

Special note to parents:

As a certified EMDR therapist, Denette combines EMDR with story-telling, art, movement and dramatic play for younger children.  Parents may be invited to participate in trauma work as this may increase felt-safety and attunement between parents and children, as well as provide children with a ‘secure-base’ when doing trauma processing.
